Do I score 2 VP for an assistant I place on my current space or behind my ship?
The designer and the publisher both ruled this out.

No. The 2 VP are for assistants that were ahead of your ship and that you passed, or left ahead of you at the end of the round. A newly placed assistant on the space you are on, or on a space you have already passed, was never skipped, so it scores nothing that round.
