How are colored and generic mana symbols in a cost paid?

A colored symbol must be paid with mana of that color. A number in a cost is generic and can be paid with mana of any color. Colorless mana has its own symbol and needs a colorless source, so the 1 in a cost like Sun Sentinel's is generic.
