How does Guarded work, and does the guard's threat count?

When a Guarded objective enters the staging area, reveal the next encounter card and attach it to the objective. The objective can't be claimed until every attached card is dealt with: enemies must be defeated or leave play, locations explored or removed, and engaging an enemy or traveling to a location is not enough. The attached enemy or location still counts its threat while in the staging area. For Guarded (X), if the encounter deck has no matching card, the guarded card enters unguarded.
