Generally yes — once you start an attempt you finish it, and the roll can matter (extra progress, darkness triggers, or roll effects). If nothing could change, the designer shrugs at skipping the roll. Whether a challenge completed by a before-action effect (such as Cheat the System or Opportunist) is settled at once without rolling is disputed: the FAQ timing chart suggests yes, several players say you still roll.
