Do I have to sacrifice a unit on the Delta temple to get its temporary VP?
The rulebook says the controller "may" withdraw a unit.

No. The temporary VP just needs control. Sacrificing one unit for 5 Prayer Points is optional and happens once per round; without it you get no Prayer Points but keep the VP.
