When I buy Offensive or Defensive Strategy, do I take back all my battle cards?

Yes. You take back all six battle cards, including played ones, then remove one to fit the strategy card. The change happens when you buy the tile, so you do not wait until you have played them all. The take-back-discards effect is also immediate and cannot be saved.
