A Colleague upgrades the part shown on the design tile. The upgraded design stays in its area until end-of-week scoring and is then removed from the game rather than returned to the stack, so each car-and-part pairing can only be upgraded once. The upgrade parts stay on the cars and count normally when you score upgrades on the cars in your garages.
