Do I pay for each pensioner when retiring, and is retirement optional?

Retirement is optional: each player "may" retire their pensioners, and you simply cannot retire a pensioner you cannot pay for. Each pensioner you retire pays the cost of the prize you choose. However many you retire, you take at most one prestige card for the turn.
