After a failed check (a 3 or 4), can I try again with a different number of dice?
The rulebook says a failed check may be attempted again if resources allow, and several players agree on how the retry works.

Yes — a 3 or 4 is a failure that may be attempted again if you still have the resources. Each retry is a brand-new check: the earlier dice are discarded, and you choose again how much to spend, so you can buy fewer or more dice. Anything already exhausted (officers, regiments, alliances) cannot be reused. Once an attempt succeeds, that action is done.
