In the neutral Assistant variant, do I have to pick up the white Assistant, and can I use it with my own on the same place?

No. Picking up a neutral Assistant is optional; if both a neutral and one of your own sit on the target place you pick whichever you like, and you may carry several neutral Assistants. You still carry out the action only once. Anyone can pick up a neutral Assistant left on a place.
