Can the card that moves me to another player's Merchant keep me where I am?
Yes, if that Merchant is on the place you are standing on. The card only says to move your Merchant stack to a Place with another player's Merchant, and it does not have to be a different Place. You do not pay that Merchant, but encounters with other tokens still happen.
