The movement rule applies pick-up, leaving and payment to the target place only.

No. Everything happens only at the target place where your move ends: Assistants on the places you pass are ignored, you drop or collect one only at the end, and you pay other Merchants only at the end. Moving two spaces is just a faster way to get to the final tile.
