Does white always place the first piece in Hive?
Several players checked the different rule texts and agree; the original rulebook is silent.

White first is the convention in online and organised play, and the hivegame.com rules PDF says so. The Gen42 rulebook does not name a starting colour, so with older sets the players agree it between themselves.
