Can a Pillbug move a piece through a narrow gap formed by stacked pieces?

Several players agree and the Pillbug rules sheet lists the gap exception; no designer post addresses specific cases.

No. The lifted piece moves as if a Beetle climbed up onto the Pillbug and back down, so Freedom to Move applies: two adjacent stacks that are higher than the levels involved block the lift, and this holds for a Grasshopper too. A single stack does not form a gate and does not block the move, and a plain gap on the ground does not block it either.
