How does the One Hive rule work, and how do I check whether a move breaks it?

The rulebook states the rule, and players agree on the remove-the-piece test.

All pieces in play, of both colours, must form one connected Hive at all times. To test a move, imagine the moving piece removed: if the remaining pieces split into two groups, the piece may not move. Pieces touching only at a corner do not count as connected. The rule does not protect circles, so a piece may leave a ring of pieces if the rest stay connected.
