Can a piece move across a gap in the Hive, or to a space next to pieces it was not touching?

The designer ruled on this in 2017 and described the contact principle, and the rulebook's Spider text matches.

No. A walking piece must be in contact with a piece it was already touching at every step, so it cannot leap across a gap. It can, however, slide into a gap space that touches pieces on both sides if it can physically slide in, and that counts as one of the Spider's three steps.

“A piece may not move across a gap, that's not a league move.”

— Gen Four Two, designer
