How exactly does the Grasshopper jump, and is there a distance limit?
The rulebook describes the jump, and players confirm the details; the designer also noted it must stay in a straight line.

The Grasshopper jumps in a straight line over one or more pieces and lands on the first empty space beyond them. There is no limit on distance, it cannot hop to an adjacent empty space (it must clear at least one piece), and it cannot cross an empty space on the way. It cannot change direction mid-jump.
