The Automa rules are in the Crisis & Control expansion (included in the Kickstarter edition), with some behavior on rules cards. You need an Automa only to cover a missing role: 2 and 3 player games work without one, and a human State is the only way to a full 4-player game. The State is never automated, and the expansion also allows solo play against Automas.
