The rulebook implies it but never says so outright, and the community reading is a single player's inference.

Almost certainly not. The rulebook says a controlled figure treats your enemies as its enemies, so it attacks them rather than you, and you decide how the ability is performed. The move and attack parts of a control ability are most likely separately optional, which one player reads as meaning you can skip it entirely.
