Does Kin of the Wild work on its own, and do its pets appear in the base campaign?

It needs the base game and adds a new story arc with companion pets. Pets appear only in the Kin of the Wild campaign and in later campaigns that support them, not in the base campaign. Its weapons, equipment and armour can mix into the base supply and turn up in shops and chests, but other content does not carry over.
