How do starting skills and gold work when starting the Clash of the Immortals campaign?

You buy your own skills with gold instead of getting the two basic starting skills, and you can choose Level I and II skills. Solo and two-hero campaigns get an extra 3-gold skill purchase that cannot be skipped. Prerequisites still apply, so Level II needs the matching Level I. The 13-gold setup applies only to the Clash campaign, not to a base campaign that includes the expansion.
