How do I travel along river paths?

River paths are locked until a game component or card explicitly allows river travel; a boat such as the Dolewood Canoe must be in play and equipped. With one, you still need the normal requirements: enough progress and no ready Obstacles. It does not need a Ranger token on it, only its presence-adjusting ability does. It unlocks rivers only, not lakes, and it can be discarded freely, which can leave you unable to use rivers again. Other travel effects do not enable rivers on their own.
