Do I need the base game to play Legacy of the Ancestors, and can I use the two maps together?

Yes, you need the base game: the expansion is a sequel campaign that uses its roles, locations, decks and tokens. It brings a new map that you use instead of the base map, not together with it, even though a few locations appear on both.
