Must I trash a Copper with Moneylender, and what if I have none?
The rulebook's card description says this directly, and forum replies agree.

Yes, if you have a Copper in hand you must trash one. The +3 coins come only if you trashed a Copper; without one, you get nothing but you still played the Action.
