If Prince sets aside Hermit, can you still gain a Madman when Hermit cannot be trashed?

Yes. The Hermit's gain is not conditional on trashing it, so you still try to gain a Madman even if the trash fails. Some argued the card requires trashing first, but the designer ruled it does not.
