Can I pay 4 gold in place of several resources, or buy resources with gold?
The rulebook allows the 4 gold substitution only when paying construction costs.

You may replace any number of the required resources with 4 gold each, even resources you hold, but only when paying a building's cost. Gold cannot be traded for resources just because you want them; resources can be bought only through card effects, such as the blue cards.
