How does movement through the gate on Via Tiburtina work with the Architect?

Going through that special gate you choose one of three routes, and each leads to a space adjacent to only one building. The rulebook example notes that moving onto the route between two buildings can cost two movement steps. For Contrarius all four Roma gates are equal, so the die decides.
