In solo, can I take a resource instead of building on the solo board's upgrade-or-2-VP and 2-VP-or-project-card spaces?
A designer or publisher reply on BoardGameGeek addresses this directly.

Yes. On the upgrade-or-2-VP space (3) you can take 1 resource instead of upgrading, and on the 2-VP-or-project-card space (7) you can take 1 resource instead of playing a project card. If you choose the 2 VP option, you get only the points and no resource.
