Does the Free space contract bonus have to be used where an animal was slaughtered?
The designer answered this directly in 2017, and the rulebook text agrees.

No. It works on any empty space you could reach with a normal Expand, and it only waives that space's land cost; you still pay the unit's price. A slaughtered animal has no cheaper replacement rule and costs full price to re-place later. The bonus must be used in the turn you earn it.
