Can I buy and sell the same good in the same round?
The designer answered this directly in 2017, and the rulebook text agrees.

Not while one of your merchants still sits on the opposite side of that good — your merchants may never occupy both the buy and sell areas of one good. Merchants only return in the next Preparation phase, so in practice you pick one direction per good each round. The exception is a merchant you take back off the market through a free Bonus Upgrade action (from a contract or Port tile), which clears the way to trade that good the other way.
