Do I have to carry out all of a card's text, or can I skip effects I don't want?

You must carry out a card's text, such as +1 Clank!, once you play it. The exceptions are resource icons (Skill, Swords, Boots), which you may leave unspent. You can sometimes dodge an effect by play order, for example playing a discard card last so you have nothing to discard.
