Do I have to carry out every effect on a card I play, or only the ones that say 'may'?
Players relaying a Dire Wolf reply agree that card effects are mandatory unless they say 'may'; the rulebook itself only covers wasted resources and discarding.

Card effects are mandatory unless the card says 'may' (or similar). The Boots, Swords and Skill a card produces are different: they go into your pool and you may spend them or not; whatever is left at end of turn is wasted. Gaining Clank, drawing and so on are effects you must take. The only way to skip a card's effects is to discard it from your hand without playing it.
