What happens if Marble Guardian's new tile can't be placed next to my tile?
You skip the placement and take 2 gold instead, per the publisher's Dire Wolf FAQ (14 Dec 2022). Placing the tile next to the far half of the starting tile is, on the literal reading, allowed.
