Can I buy cloth earlier in the turn to pay for the Joust Field?
The rulebook states this plainly.

No — the joust field is activated in phase 3, before any production building, so the cloth must already be in your reserve at the start of the turn. Deniers from the trading post can be used, since it is resolved earlier.
