What exactly happens when I pass the initiative?
The rulebook states this directly.

You hand the marker to the next clockwise player who still has cards and the round ends immediately. You don't play a card this round and can't use Prelude actions. The new holder leads the next round, and you play normally in it. Passing is not sitting out the chapter.
