How do the A, B and C starting boxes on a leader card work, and is there a two-player gate exception?

Place pieces in the systems marked A, B and C on the setup card, as the leader card's boxes show; pips under a ship icon give the number of ships. There is no general two-player exception, so some leaders start asymmetrically. Setup cards only mark which clusters are out of play, they don't change what A, B and C are.
