Which ambition marker do I take when declaring, and where does the zero marker go?
The rulebook states this directly.

Take the highest-number marker from the Available Markers area and place it in the ambition's box. The zero marker goes onto your lead card, covering its number, and returns to its space when that card is discarded at the end of the round.
