Can I play solo or with 5 players using only the base game?
The designer and publisher confirmed the base game is 2-4 players.

No — the base game supports 2 to 4 players. Solo play (against Unity) and the fifth player come from the Escalation expansion, and the Deluxe edition includes it. Escalation's extra components, such as the 5-player factions, neutral upgrades and the Nethervoid, can be used at any player count.
