What if the other side leaves or is removed before the battle resolves?
Publisher posts answered this and the rulebook says battle ends once only one faction remains.

If only one faction remains in the active region (for example after a Diplomacy card, or a development replaces the transport), the battle ends with no dice and no winner. A player with no ships left in the battle can no longer participate and cannot play Diplomacy cards.
