Agricola
Do I have to play a minor improvement when I take Family Growth or Renovation on a space that also offers one?
A designer account confirmed it is not required.

No — the improvement is optional, so you may take only the Family Growth or Renovation part. The main action (renovation or growth) is the part you must do.
