What happens if I have no room for a newborn animal?
Designer replies and the rulebook agree: a newborn is only added if you can accommodate it.

It is not born (or runs away) and gives you nothing; you also cannot cook a parent afterwards to make room. The designer notes the ban on breeding really bites only when you hold exactly two of a type with room for just those two, since extras could be cooked during feeding.
