If I use the Meeting Place, do I have to take the starting player token?

In the revised edition, yes: using the space makes you the starting player and you may additionally play a minor improvement. The 'and/or' look of the original board meant you could take only the minor improvement and skip the token; an older designer reply gave that choice.
