The first occupation you play in the game is free, but only on the Lessons space above Day Laborer; every later occupation costs 1 food there. The extra Lessons space in 3-4 player games has its own costs (2 food in 3 players; 1 food for the first two and 2 food after that in 4 players). Once you already have an occupation, a second one is never free again.
