On the Western US map, must each player's track be contiguous before east and west connect?
The rulebook requires a railroad's track to be contiguous until the transcontinental connection.

Yes. Until a western starting city connects to an eastern one, each player's own track must be contiguous, though one player's line may branch. Different players can have separate pieces.
