Can I keep a gem in hand instead of playing it, and does unspent aether carry over?
The designer answered this and it matches the rulebook's aether description.

Yes to keeping it: you may play as many or as few cards as you like, and there is no hand size limit before the draw phase refills you to five. No to carrying aether: unspent aether is lost at end of your turn, though an unplayed gem will give its aether on a later turn.
