Can I switch back to an earlier elite class, or take basic class levels after going elite?
Forum replies agree and the rulebook allows multiple elite classes, but no official ruling addresses switching back.

Yes to both. You become whichever elite class you last took a level in, so another level in an earlier elite class switches you back. You can also keep taking levels in a basic class you already have without leaving your elite class, and a hero may hold levels in several elite classes.
