Can I play equipment, class feature or Response cards straight from my hand without placing them on my player board first?
The designer answered this in 2019 and 2021, and the rulebook lists playing from hand or board as an action.

Yes. Playing a card from hand costs one action and does not need an empty slot. Equipping or preparing a card onto the board needs the matching slot (class feature, weapon, armor or accessory) to be empty. Slotting a card mostly saves hand space and lets you cycle your deck faster, and some classes can slot cards for free.
